Utagba-Uno Medical Mission – The Shooting Of Arrow Of Love.

The love ship of AVTHS MEDICAL MISSION berthed at Utagba-Uno communities in Delta State from April 17 – 20, 2019.

This medical and social mission was tagged UTAGBA ARROW of LOVE and the venue was at the Ndueze Primary School, Utagba-Uno.  The shooting of the ARROW OF LOVE was facilitated by one of the sons of the land who the Almighty has shown greater love and prepared to give some love and hope to his people. He is our indefatigable Chairman, Board of Trustees, AVTHS, Prof. Emman Osakwe who gallantly retired from the services of Delta State University, Abraka, Delta State, Nigeria on his 70th Birthday. The name Utagba in Ukwuani (Igbo) language means shooting an arrow.

The team offered free diagnosis and treatment of various diseases and sicknesses as well as free surgical, general medical, and ophthalmologic/optometric services giving freedom, hope, and life back to the people. There was soul-winning devotional preaching, one-on-one counseling, deliverance prayer sessions, and the distribution of free gospel tracts and Holy Bibles.

At end of this outreach, a total of 491 cases were treated including 8 surgical operations (general and eye); 270 laboratory tests; 121 persons underwent eye screening and 92 sight and reading glasses were dispensed. 164 children were dewormed in a group on the first day. All other children that came to the pharmacy were equally dewormed as they visited on the second day.

In addition to the provision of medical services, evangelization programmes were carried out leading to 191 persons accepting Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Saviour in addition to many who rededicated their lives to Christ. There was the distribution of 452 Holy Bibles and 10,000 Gospel tracts. Other activities included the distribution of items of clothing; and educational materials, especially to the children.

Except for the case of an elderly woman who developed complications after surgery, all other patients went home hale and hearty. The patient had to be referred to the Delta State Teaching Hospital, Oghara where she underwent further surgery and management. Her medical and other bills totaling almost a million naira were borne by our Chairman’s family and AVTHS. In all, we remain grateful to our Good God Who has maintained a 100% record of life for all our patients in our medical missions since inception in 2008.

Special thanks to the Management of Ndueze Primary School, Utagba-Uno who allowed us to use their premises, and Obiaruku General Hospital, Obiaruku and Donak Hospital, Kwale for giving us access to their theatre for surgeries. Also, May & Baker Plc; SIVO Adpharm Pharmaceuticals Ltd; MERCK & Co Pharmaceutical Com; Emzor Pharmaceuticals and Elint Pharmacy, Benin City for the supply of some of the medications we dispensed.

We thank the leadership of Scripture Union, Umutu who offered their Camp for our use to accommodate over 40 team members for the period of the medical mission. The AVTHS acknowledges the invaluable contributions of the collaborating groups and individuals. We appreciate the contributions of the family of Prof. Emman and Mabel Osakwe for the realization of this medical and social mission.
