The Africa Vision Tract House Society (AVTHS) and the Nigeria Christian Graduate Fellowship (NCGF), in collaboration with local churches, Christian non-governmental organisations, and missionary groups, conducted a medical mission in the Ebedei Community, Delta State, from 20–26 May 2012. This marked the tenth free medical mission undertaken by AVTHS in needy African communities. The outreach provided comprehensive medical care, counselling, and social support while sharing the gospel.
A multidisciplinary team delivered services across obstetrics and gynaecology, general medicine, ophthalmology, dermatology, and paediatrics, and conducted laboratory examinations, including HIV/AIDS screening. Following diagnosis, free drugs, medications, and eyeglasses for sight and reading were dispensed. Major surgeries were carried out on selected hernia and eye patients.
The Medical Mission achieved the following outcomes:
i. Over 1,176 patients received medical attention, comprising 325 adult males (28%), 772 adult females (61%), and 127 children (11%).
ii. 171 eyeglasses were dispensed for sight and reading.
iii. 63 patients were screened for HIV/AIDS, with 8 men and 8 women testing positive.
iv. 45 patients underwent surgical procedures, including 18 men, 17 women, and 10 children.
v. Distribution of bales of free garments and clothing materials to beneficiaries.
vi. Volunteer evangelists and counsellors distributed 200 Holy Bibles in English and 2,000 gospel tracts in English and the Ukwuani languages.
vii. 782 individuals received counselling, with 270 people making decisions for Christ. Follow-up of new converts will be coordinated by the Christian community in Ebedei.
viii. As part of community development, Friends for Life, Asaba, organised entrepreneurial and skills acquisition workshops for women on the production of “chin-chin” and doughnuts.
We thank God for the success of this mission and appreciate the commitment of all partners, volunteers, and local churches. We also acknowledge the cooperation and support of the Ebedei Community, which contributed to the smooth execution of the programme.
