The Africa Vision Tract House Society (AVTHS) and the Nigeria Christian Graduate Fellowship (NCGF), in collaboration with the Chapel of New Covenant, Uyo, conducted a medical mission in the Ifa Ikot–Okpon Community, Uyo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, from 7–12 February 2012. The outreach was organised to provide comprehensive medical care and share the gospel with residents of the host community.
The people of Ifa Ikot–Okpon received quality medical services across multiple specialities, including obstetrics and gynaecology, general medicine, ophthalmology, dermatology, and paediatrics. The team also conducted laboratory investigations, including HIV/AIDS screening. Following diagnosis, free medications and eyeglasses for sight and reading were dispensed. In addition, major surgical procedures were performed for hernia and eye conditions.
The Medical Mission achieved the following outcomes:
i. A total of 1,064 residents received medical attention.
ii. Of those treated, 257 (24%) were adult males, 639 (60%) were adult females, 31 (3%) were pregnant women, and 137 (13%) were children.
iii. 705 individuals received counselling, and 232 people made decisions for Christ. Follow-up of new converts is being coordinated by the Chapel of New Covenant, Uyo.
iv. 132 patients were screened for HIV/AIDS, with 18 testing positive.
v. Seventy-eight (78) patients underwent surgical procedures, comprising 35 men, 33 women, and 10 children.
vi. Distribution of free clothing materials (bales) to beneficiaries.
vii. Distribution of 145 Holy Bibles in English and Efik languages.
viii. Provision of free drugs and eyeglasses to patients following medical evaluation.
We thank God for the success of the mission and appreciate the partnership of the Chapel of New Covenant, Uyo, as well as the dedication of all volunteers and medical personnel. We also acknowledge the cooperation of the Ifa Ikot–Okpon community, which contributed to the smooth execution of the outreach.
